It’s been 2 weeks since Houston, where I PR’d by 38 seconds, running 1:13:45! It was a super cold day, with some wind. I had trouble starting out, despite getting in a solid warm-up, but by mile 3 I settled in with some male pacers, until the marathon split off about halfway through my race. Then the field was more spread out. A tall guy told me to tuck in behind him, but the wind seemed to be coming from the side (cross-wind) making it difficult to focus on going forward. I wasn’t able to close quite as quickly as I would have liked, but it was still a super solid day!
Following the race, I took it pretty easy for 6 days, then had a big marathon sesh on Sunday. 3 x 5 mi MP/1 mi float. For marathon pace we’re going for 5:51ish, based on half marathon fitness, despite this possibly being quicker than my race day pace. With floats I averaged 5:52. It was on a flat 0.72 loop, which made grabbing fluids easy, but I’m going to try a much longer loop for the next session tomorrow. It was a lot of loops and not reflective of how a true race will be. I’ve decided on a ~3.3 mile rolling loop with turns; the Turkey Trot 5k course completing the full loop. I’m excited to see how this session goes. It’s supposed to be well under freezing in the morning, but warm up quickly.
I settled on running the Socal Marathon on March 5th.
Unfortunately, the Snickers Full that I planned to do on this day would not
count as an OTQ, as the course is not USATF sanctioned. I’m ready to try and
lower my time under 2:37. Changing up training to include more speed, layering
on the fitness, and assuming a decent weather day I definitely think this is
within reach!
